Tried this myself while visiting New York and had a lower aparture value resulting in a blurred tail.
The DOF is perfect imo.
I would say you really nailed this composition!

flyhart - it was a cool morning but I think the photographer with his hands on a cold camera is more deserving of your sympathy than the furry-pawed rodent
Tysmin - I have seen many that look much redder than this one. Not sure but I think it may be seasonal & they look redder during spring and summer
